I have been obsessed with AI and trying to push its limits. I've started using it almost every day... mostly for entertainment, but one thing is for sure. It is here to stay!
As you probably noticed, during our super-fast technology advancement, AI has infiltrated nearly every aspect of our lives, promising greater efficiency, convenience, and innovation. However, while AI offers many benefits, its role in education has sparked concerns about its potential to change everything we know about learning and education as a whole.
What do we have to know? When can we just use our brains? Better yet, when should we use AI?
In this post, I will discuss the darker side of AI, and with the help of AI, I will explore how it will be turning education upside down... and hopefully all us learners don't fall out!
Here is the top 5 reasons AI is negatively impacting education & learning.
1. Dehumanization of Learning
Education is not just about the transfer of information; it is a deeply human endeavor that involves personal interaction, empathy, critical thinking, and creativity.
However, too much use of AI in education risks dehumanizing the learning process. Automated grading systems, virtual tutors, and personalized learning algorithms may streamline education, but they often lack the "human touch" and empathy that live (human) educators provide.
Students may find themselves interacting more with screens than with real teachers, and the students miss out on valuable examples, relationships and guidance.
2. Standardization Over Individualization
One of the promises of AI in education is its ability to "supposedly" individualize the learning experiences for students.
However, this personalization often comes at the cost of standardization. Everyone is on a HUGE "Standards" and "data" kick, but AI algorithms are more likely going to pigeonhole students into learning paths based on their past performance, without recognizing emotions, different learning speeds, unique strengths, weaknesses, and interests of each individual.
As a result, education becomes more about meeting predetermined benchmarks than fostering genuine intellectual curiosity and growth. Some of the best things in life are immeasurable.
3. Reinforcement of Biases
AI systems are only as unbiased as the data they are trained on, and unfortunately, biases are pervasive in our society.
When AI algorithms are used to make decisions in education, such as admissions, grading, and resource allocation, they can perpetuate and even exacerbate existing biases. For example, an AI-powered admissions system may favor applicants from certain socioeconomic backgrounds or reinforce gender stereotypes in subject recommendations. Thus, rather than leveling the playing field, AI in education can further entrench inequality and discrimination.
4. Erosion of Critical Thinking Skills
In an age where information is readily available at our fingertips, the ability to critically evaluate and analyze information is more crucial than ever. However, the convenience of AI-powered tools for research and problem-solving may inadvertently undermine students' development of critical thinking skills. When algorithms provide instant answers and solutions, students may become passive consumers of information rather than active participants in the learning process. This dependence on AI can stifle creativity, curiosity, and independent thinking, ultimately producing graduates ill-equipped to navigate the complexities of the real world.
5. Loss of Privacy and Autonomy
The widespread adoption of AI in education raises significant concerns about privacy and data security. As students interact with AI-powered learning platforms and tools, they generate vast amounts of data that can be mined, analyzed, and potentially exploited by individuals, corporations, and governments. This erosion of privacy not only compromises students' autonomy over their personal information but also raises ethical questions about surveillance and control in educational settings.
In conclusion, while AI holds immense potential to revolutionize education, its unchecked advancement risks undermining the very principles it seeks to enhance. To safeguard the integrity of education in the digital age, we must slow down, examine the role of AI in learning, and ensure that it serves as a tool, and not a replacement of "real" human educators.
